The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a widely cultivated deciduous shrub grown for its tasty fruits, but also ornamentally as a small tree. In summer, orange in red, funnel shaped flowers are produced, followed by round edible fruit. For best results, grow Punica granatum in well-drained soil in full sun. Pomegranates need a long, hot summer to produce fruit and a temperature between 13C and 16C in autumn for the fruit to ripen. Prune only to remove dead or damaged material and mulch annually with well rotted manure or compost. Pomegranates are hungry trees, so mulch annually with well rotted manure or compost to maintain soil nutrient levels.
