Pine is an evergreen tree native to the mountain ranges of Europe. All year round it is a source of colour and structure in the garden, and in spring it produces male and female flowers, the males being a lovely golden colour. Pine makes a lovely addition to alpine gardens, sunny meadows and gravel gardens. For best results grow it in full sun in well-drained soil. Pine requires little maintenance as a tree. The best time to plant it is January-April and October-November. The best pruning to remove damaged branches or to systemize its crown is in the month of March.
