The olive tree is a common tree found in Mediterranean countries, where it has a long tradition of cultivation and also symbolic importance. The olive bonsai needs a full sun location which also helps reduce the size of the leaves. It can withstand temperatures slightly below 0° C, but must be protected from the strongest frosts. Water the olive bonsai thoroughly whenever the soil dries out, but avoid constant moisture. Good quality normal tap water is good for the olive plant. Hard pruning, if necessary, should be done in late winter. The olive will respond with vigorous growth next spring. It can also bloom from old wood. When the young shoots grow too much, cut them to one or two pairs of leaves.
